The British bone broth producer has launched Proper Beef and Proper Chicken Gravies, promising slow-cooked flavour without the hours beside the hob.
There are few things more dispiriting than an otherwise excellent roast dinner marooned in mediocre instant gravy. Borough Broth is hoping to offer a convenient middle ground with its first chilled gravy range, now available in more than 200 Sainsbury’s stores.
The two new products, Proper Beef Gravy and Proper Chicken Gravy, are made using the company’s slow-cooked organic bone broths, British bones, herbs and wine. Both are also described as free from ultra-processed ingredients.
Proper Beef Gravy begins with broth made from grass-fed beef bones, enriched with organic herbs and a generous splash of organic red wine. Its chicken counterpart uses organic, free-range chicken bones with herbs and white wine, resulting in a lighter gravy designed to accompany poultry and less robust dishes.
Both arrive ready-made in 400g chilled pouches and need only to be heated before serving. They are intended for everything from Sunday roasts and pies to sausages and mash – or simply as something into which you can shamelessly dunk a roast potato.
The launch marks a natural extension for Borough Broth, which was founded by Ros Heathcote in 2015 and has spent the past decade producing organic bone broths from British ingredients.
“We’ve spent years making broth this way, so gravy felt like a very natural next step for us,” said Heathcote. “Proper gravy takes time and there really isn’t a shortcut to getting that depth of flavour.
“We’ve taken the time and done the slow bit for home cooks, and they can now enjoy the convenience of a ready-to-use gravy without compromising on how it’s made or, most importantly, how it tastes.”
At £5 for a 400g pack, this is unquestionably at the premium end of the gravy market. Still, for anyone who wants something closer to homemade without simmering bones and stock for several hours, it could prove a useful fridge standby as roast-dinner season returns.
