Christmas – Pizza Express Christmas Menu 2013

Hannah: Jack asked me to be a plus one to try to the new Pizza Express Christmas Menu; it’s one of my favourite places to eat at so how could I refuse? I had seen their Christmas menu advertised, but had previously had little inclination to try it, preferring to stick to my favourites…

First impressions

Jack chose a Sapphire Bombay and tonic, and I chose a prosecco which was chilled and refreshing.

Sipping and looking at the menu, I decided on my courses; Arancini Ragu for a starter, Pollo ad Astra Pizza for my main, and the Mulled Winter Fruit Crumble for my dessert.

Starter

Four baked Ragu and mozzarella risotto balls, served with rocket and a spiced arrabbiata sauce. The risotto balls were something new for me, and I’m glad I chose them. Warm, well presented and given a perfect sized portion, I enjoyed the different textures, and the warming heat of the sauce complimented perfectly the creamy mozarella.

Main

Delivered quickly, and piping hot, the Pollo Ad Astra had toppings of chicken, sweet pepperdew peppers, red onion, mozarella, tomato, caramelised onion, Cajun spices and garlic oil. There were bursts of flavour from the pepperdew peppers, which along with the tomato and spices were rich and wonderful. The Cajun spices were noticeable but not over powering, and the garlic oil was subtle in the background. Although not particularly ‘Christmassy’, the flavours and colours were bright, warming and filling; perfect for warming up after a cold Winter’s day.

Dessert

Spiced winter berry compote baked with a later of creme anglaise and a classic crumble top. This was a mouthwatering desert; the Mulled fruit and rich creamy texture mixing beautifully together, along with the soft crunch of the topping. Well presented and filling, it was a perfect finish to dinner…

Final thoughts

Initially I wouldn’t have considered the Christmas menu, but having chosen the set menu for dinner I couldn’t recommend it more. There are classic courses on the menu, but also thoughtful festive additions that with their flavours and exquisiteness capture the elements of Christmas.
