Review – Pizza Express Autumn Menu 2016

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

Every 6 months or so the nice people at Pizza Express invite us to come down and try some new things on their menu. This is the Autumn Menu for 2016 – which includes the return of some ‘old favourites’ and a couple of things

(NB: as always, they’ve added more things to the menu than you can realistically try in one sitting (unless you are an elephant that enjoys pizza and that can read menus) so what you see here is obviously not everything that’s new!)

We head down to the Pizza Express on George Street, Croydon (my endz bruv) to see what some of the new stuff tasted like so that we could inform you.

(NB: prices vary per restaurant, what we give here is accurate for Croydon, but your results may vary…)

New stuff we try this time includes…

Basilicata Romana £13.20

Probably the best pizza I’ve had from Pizza Express so far

A lamb, mint and chilli delight drenched in garlic oil and sprinkled liberally with red onion, (more) shaved gran milano cheese and a creamy basil pesto. Th combination of lamb, spice and mint flavours taste a little like a kofta, and it is, without a doubt, the pizza I have enjoyed most from Pizza Express. Meraviglioso!

Risotto Fresco £5.55

It was the chunks of salmon that made this work

A creamy white wine risotto interspersed with a combination of extremely gratifying salmon, gran milano cheese shavings and a little bit of chilli oil to cut through the excessively rich flavours that are par for the course in a risotto. Probably one of the best risottos I have experienced and not what I expected.

Leggera Superfood Salad £10.65

Stretching the definition of salad to improbable, oversized and delicious limits

Seems like a lot to pay for a salad, right? But, in case you can’t see the scale on this monster, here we have a main course in its own right, full of what can only be described as ‘esoteric’ ingredients and still coming in at under 500 calories.

Black rice, red quinoa, mung beans, chickpeas, cranberries, kale, ‘magical’ edible things that white people tend to feel good about eating. All that aside, it is delicious and filling – though they do take the ‘light’ house dressing too far.

As ever, we maintain our stance that the word ‘superfood’ is marketing bullshit and not to buy it because you expect it to be some magical panacea. Buy it because it is delicious >:D
