Down a side street, and down some dark, dark stairs lies a den of hot dogs, carb laden pizzas and a dessert that defeats even the hungriest of eyes- and we hear there’s a secret little gaming den. Our Charlie grabbed a torch and headed in.

Ambience
Think dive bar. Think Cheers (yes, I know I’m showing my age here). Think basement bar New York or Chicago.
Dark walls, deep green booths, Tiffany style lightshades, neon signs and vintage posters. It’s easy to get lost in here, to lose track of time, and just immerse yourself in your food, and the company. And if you like gaming, I’d highly recommend a visit to 17 Below downstairs – yes this basement has a basement bar.
Food and Drink
Go hungry.
Unless you take the Naked option, the dogs in here come loaded and then some.
Go for something lighter like the New Yorker with pastrami, horseradish mayo, Swiss cheese and jalapenos, or go all in with the Farmageddon – pulled beef, pulled pork, crispy bacon, fried chicken and chilli cheese.
Or of course you can go for the dough option.
Try the carbloaded options like the Mac N Cheese (yes, mac n cheese on a pizza with optional bacon, pepperoni and pulled pork) or the Triple Threat – pizza topped with bacon cheese burger and fries.
Of course loaded pizza and dogs, needs loaded fries too. Obviously.
Personal favourites include the Kiev (herbed crumb, garlic butter and cheese) and the NY Fries (pastrami, mustard, pickles and cheese).
Of course if you have room, there’s always dessert and there is none more famous here than the Dessert Pizza.
Take one pizza base, top it with Nutella and marshmallows, and then any two sweet chocolatey items and a sauce from their list. I’ve never made it past two slices, but thankfully they let you take it home.
Drinks by this point almost feel like an aside, but their cocktail menu is decent, as are the wines and beers. There are also a great number of classic American softs like Pepsi and root beer, so there’s definitely something for everyone.
Verdict
Proper dogs, proper setting and all the classic 80s films on a screen above the bar. It’s not fine dining, but it’s not meant to be and there’s a reason it’s done so well when others nearby haven’t.
It’s a classic and as perfect for a 14 year olds birthday party as a 40 year olds. Which gives me an idea.
