Godet: London’s only wine pub blends French flair, craft beer and guest chefs

Billing itself as London’s only wine pub, Godet has made its mark on Essex Road since opening in late 2024. The Victorian corner site has been reimagined as a stylish yet understated space where natural wine, craft beer and rotating food residencies come together under one roof.

The name comes from the French slang for “a glass”, nodding to the heritage of owner Sylvain, who also runs neighbourhood wine bar Binch in Hackney Downs. Godet keeps wine central with a succinct, weekly evolving list that leans heavily on French bottles but also showcases highlights from across Europe. Tastings and “meet the winemaker” events keep the programme fresh, catering to everyone from curious newcomers to seasoned enthusiasts.

Nine rotating taps showcase the best of the UK craft beer scene, changing every fortnight. Expect everything from clean pilsners to experimental pours, with staples including Lost and Grounded Keller Pils and Kernel’s Table Beer.

Food is equally dynamic, with a rolling line-up of guest chefs. Previous residencies have included Anna Søgaard’s Jomfru, Diarmuid Goodwin, and Perk’d Up Burger, each bringing their own flavour to the kitchen.

At weekends, Godet takes on a livelier energy. Vinyl DJs spin funk, soul, disco, Afrobeat, house and garage, all on a high-fidelity sound system, ensuring the pub doubles as a late-night hangout as much as a local spot for a glass of wine.

Godet is at once a pub, a wine bar and a community hub – a relaxed place where the drinks list is serious but the atmosphere is all about fun.
