Less than a year after reopening in Mayfair, Automat is evolving once again. This summer, the Mount Street restaurant has unveiled a completely redesigned menu alongside the launch of Autobar, a cocktail-led space that nods to the late-night energy that defined the original Automat when it first opened on Dover Street in 2006.
While the first iteration became a favourite with London’s fashion, media and arts crowd, the latest version is taking a more contemporary approach to American dining, pairing ingredient-led cooking with a classic cocktail programme in an intimate setting tucked behind luxury leather goods house Tanner Krolle.
The new menu looks beyond familiar diner staples, drawing inspiration from the breadth of American food culture and the Mediterranean influences that have shaped it. Starters include red prawn tartare with Amalfi lemon and olive oil, lamb kebab with buttermilk and mint pistou, and a Green Goddess salad.
Larger plates continue that balance between comfort and refinement, from steamed sea bass with piquillo peppers and Kalamata olives to a prawn hot dog served with Brick Lane curry mayonnaise. The signature Automat cheeseburger remains firmly on the menu, while desserts include apple pie with vanilla ice cream, strawberries and cream, and a classic affogato.
Alongside the food comes Autobar, a dedicated bar serving a concise list of cocktail staples including Dirty Martinis, Negronis, Margaritas, Old Fashioneds and Cosmopolitans, as well as playful additions such as Espresso Martini shots.
A separate bar snack menu keeps things simple, with summer crudités and whipped feta, pizzette topped with mozzarella and anchovies, St George Bakery baguette with wild rocket butter and chicken nuggets served with chive ranch and Oscietra caviar.
The wine list is equally considered, ranging from Champagne houses including Billecart-Salmon and Jacquesson to white Burgundy, Californian Chardonnay and Bordeaux, with wines by the glass starting from £16.
Hidden beneath Tanner Krolle on Mount Street, the 67-cover restaurant continues to lean into understated luxury rather than spectacle. Designed by Tomèf Studio, the dining room combines warm lighting, vintage-inspired details and a soundtrack curated by DJ Chloé Caillet, creating a space that feels as suited to late-night cocktails as it does to dinner.
With its refreshed menu and the arrival of Autobar, Automat is making a stronger case for modern American dining in Mayfair—less about nostalgia, more about giving familiar classics a polished new setting.
