Review – Cocotte, Shoreditch

Rotisserie chicken is one of those dishes that seems straightforward on paper but quietly reveals a restaurant’s skill. Cocotte, which now has several neighbourhood sites across London, has built its reputation on getting the balance exactly right: well-sourced birds, careful seasoning, a warm, relaxed atmosphere. The Shoreditch branch captures that formula particularly well, offering a cosy, convivial space devoted to one thing above all else: excellent chicken.

The ambience

The restaurant is tucked on a corner of Hoxton Square, offering a snug and intimate space to tuck into some proper comfort food. On a Friday evening, tables are dotted with groups of friends settling in for an unhurried dinner while the low lighting and close-set seating create a sense of shared easiness.

Cocotte’s interiors are simple but thoughtfully put together. Bistro-style chairs sit around unfussy wooden tables, while the lighting transitions easily from bright daytime café to softly atmospheric evening dining room. It feels classically neighbourhood-oriented: somewhere you might drop in for a quick lunch, linger over a bottle of wine midweek, or gather with friends before a night out.

The food

The menu is devoted primarily to chicken, and rightly so. While burgers and steak appear on menus at Cocotte’s Parsons Green and Richmond branches, there is little incentive to stray from the restaurant’s central offering.

We begin with chicken and truffle croquettes, a dish that neatly sets the tone for what follows. Their crisp breadcrumb exterior gives way to soft, juicy strands of chicken and deep, earthy truffle. Rich but delicate, they are indulgent bites that vanish almost before the conversation has properly begun.

Then comes the rotisserie chicken itself. It arrives with beautifully bronzed skin and a deeply savoury aroma that immediately suggests careful seasoning and patient cooking. The meat is succulent and well-rested, pulling effortlessly away from the bone, with a balance of salt, herbs and roasted depth that gives the bird real character.

Cocotte offers an array of dips to accompany its hero dish, all of which add welcome variety to each bite. The classic chicken jus is well-made but slightly overshadowed by bolder options. A green herb sauce is bright and fragrant, garlic mayo delivers exactly the creamy punch one hopes for, and the spicy dip – one of our favourites -brings a lively warmth to each bite. “Tomato bliss,” somewhat misleadingly, turns out to be predominantly beetroot-based and gently sweet. At the same time, the nduja option adds a smoky, savoury edge that pairs particularly well with the crisp skin and skinny fries.

The fries are quietly exceptional. Thin-cut, evenly golden and gorgeously crisp, they manage to retain the flavour of the potatoes themselves, rather than fading into anonymous crunch. They are dangerously easy to keep picking at between bites of chicken.

Alongside the richer dishes, a spelt and oyster mushroom salad provides a refreshing contrast. The combination of nutty spelt, baby spinach, broccolini, cherry tomatoes and mixed seeds is lifted by a lively chilli-lemon dressing. The oyster mushrooms are slightly tart, but the overall effect is vibrant and texturally satisfying. It is a thoughtful side that brings balance to the table.

The verdict

Cocotte’s appeal lies in its clarity of purpose. Rather than chasing trends or sprawling menus, it focuses on one central dish and executes it with care. The rotisserie chicken is flavourful, well-seasoned, and accompanied by strong sides and inventive dips.

Combined with the easy warmth of the Shoreditch dining room and a series of well-priced set menus, Cocotte feels exactly like what it aims to be: a dependable neighbourhood restaurant where simple food is given the attention it deserves.
