Homely
The Ambiance
The Duchess of Cambridge embraces the corner of Goldhawk Road, where Hammersmith glides into Chiswick. After a recent refurbishment and revamping it has emerged as a rather tasteful gastro pub. The décor of duck egg blue walls combined with dark brown wooden flooring and tables are a nod to shabby-chick.
The Wednesday I visited the majority of people are gathered in the secret garden located towards the back. While the pub is by no means packed it has enough bodies inside to create a bit of atmosphere. It’s the sort of place that will lend itself well to the darker evenings. You’d pop in for a pint (or tipple of your choice!) and drink well into the evening.
The Food & Drink
Food-wise The Duchess of Cambridge has teamed up with the guys at Banger Bros to offer a great alternative to your standard pub grub.
I am a massive sausage and mash fan so it made my decision easy. Normally you just see sausage and mash as a bog standard menu option – but not here! Sausage-wise you can choose from four options: The Londoner, Hot Smoked Toulouse, Beef & Stout and Veggie. The accompanying mash there was a choice of mustard, cheese, spring onion or plain and buttery.
Hot Smoked Toulouse and Mustard Mash
With a lick of my lips I went for Hot Smoked Toulouse and mustard mash. They arrived in a delightful swamp of gravy. This is sausage and mash at its best. The only downside – the dish came with mushy peas which I felt added nothing and were quite unwelcome.
While eyeing the menu I was tempted by the Korean Dog with kimchi, gochujang mayo and shallots or the Hot Burger a spicy mixture of melted jalapeno cheese, piquillo peppers, pickled jalapenos. Burgers are served in a signature toasted brioche.
I noted Burgers and dogs arrive at the table in sweet wooden boxes lined with paper – this is proper hand to mouth food.
Booze-wise they have quite the selection. From a decent wine list to both local and international beer as well as cocktails – they pretty much have your covered whatever your tipple is.
The Verdict
It’s a nice relaxed local pub with reasonably priced food and sausages worth travelling for.
