Balans of Soho, established in we know not when describes itself as a “restaurant, bar and haven for the convivial”. If I had to describe it in a word it would be ‘funccentric’ – which means both fun, eccentric, AND centred around fun (I just made this word up, is that OK?). Convivial indeed. With a substantial breakfast offering and a small but carefully decided menu, they seem to focus more on modern European food and drink (though there are a few…non European culinary curveballs thrown in). They also stay open ’til late, living up to that precedent set by their first outlet in Soho – a place where people seem to have a higher tolerance for drugs and less of a need for things like ‘sleep’ and ‘water’.
Back to their Kensington outlet. Take a look at the decor. Yes, that’s Captain Scarlett on the wall. Yes, that’s a tree (albeit not a real tree – I actually asked) growing out of the floor. The atmosphere here lives up the branding – our waiter for the evening, David, was an English guy with a habit of singing as he worked. Yeah, actually singing. When was the last time you saw that in a restaurant?! In fact, I don’t think I can recall the time I have seen such a happy waiter. It was infectious. A happy infection spreading through West London. The wait staff all wear checked shirts – which reminds me of one of the agencies I used to work at. Kinda weird but familiar. Like my family. I’m OK with it.
The manager Darko (“like Donny Darko!”) who was also excellent – was also happy to recommend new and exciting alcoholic substances. Since I’d basically had every whisky and gin on their menu, he introduced me to olfactory orgasm that is Plantation’s 20 year XO rum. It is THE best rum I have ever had (admittedly I’m not a rum expert….yet/ever), and at around only £45 a bottle (retail, not in Balans) – is a goddamn steal. This place is a bit silly and a lot of fun. Recommended!
