This was one of many exciting stops on my first ‘food tour of Cornwall’ with the lovely Laura and Kieran (both of whom are involved with Tasting Britain as writers, and both of whom I now count as good friends).
Located right on the awe inspiring Constantine Bay, Treglos Hotel is a four star, family run outlet that originally dates back to 1895, when it was first built. Originally a four bedroom house which ludicrously majestic sea views, it was converted into a ‘proper’ hotel in 1933 and has been doing the hotel thing ever since. Run by the Barlow family for more than forty years now, Treglos hosts 42 rooms plus a 18 Hole Golf Course & Leisure Club (which we didn’t notice because the restaurant is pretty legit and that was where we spent most of our time).
About that restaurant: like almost every longstanding hotel, Treglos has a pretty exciting restaurant attached to it. And this is how we ended up in Constantine Bay, surrounded by talkative old ladies and equally talkative young ladies from Sheffield (and if you’re from up there how the hell do you end up waiting tables on the far south western tip of the UK? The plot thickens)
What to say of said restaurant? For the first time in a long time, I think I was the youngest person in the room – and I am no spring chicken (and also if we discount some of the ‘sprightly’ wait staff). This is definitely a place with a distinguished, ‘retirement’ kinda feel to it (i.e everyone is probably older and more wealthy than you). The menu changes daily – which I believe has something to do with the produce being VERY local indeed. Also they don’t like it if you dine in the evening (after 7) in shorts or flip flops. True story.
One more thing to mention: The views are goddamn fkn spectacular – on a cloudless day (which we were treated to… thanks Mother Nature!) you can watch the sun and sky transition across various fiery auburn shades, before eventually disappearing beneath the horizon and the flawless azure sea. I w
