London’s first carbon-negative roastery has expanded its commitment to sustainability through a partnership with Swiss not-for-profit organisation, On A Mission.
The #KissTheHippoForest initiative means, not only has the brand become a completely carbon negative company, but all of its coffees, coffee pods, and coffee products are now carbon negative, too.
For every coffee pod and individual bag of ethically-sourced coffee purchased through KissTheHippo.com or in-store, Kiss the Hippo will offset more than its carbon footprint by planting a tree as part of the #KissTheHippoForest project.
Helping to strategically reforest areas in locations including Colombia, Madagascar, Zambia and California, it is hoped that the scheme will help local communities and play a part in combatting the global climate crisis.
Kiss the Hippo’s ethically coffee is roasted using the environmentally-certified Loring Smart Roaster, and the roastery is powered by renewable Energy. Used coffee grounds are sent to be transformed into advanced biofuels. The company’s coffee pods are also organic and 100% compostable.
It is estimated that 350 million coffee pods are consumed each year in the UK alone, despite the fact that they take up to
500 years to biodegrade.
Managing Director Alex Damgaci said: “We’ve wanted to be carbon negative since we started — to actually create a net positive for the environment has always been our goal. The climate is in crisis, and we don’t want to experience a similar shock to Covid when that crisis finally reaches its peak.
“So, for us, this decision was a necessary step to create awareness, and one we hope others will soon follow. Through our partnership with On a Mission, we are delighted to now be a totally carbon negative company with a full range of carbon negative products, allowing us to help the planet, one cup of coffee at a time”.
