Cornwall’s newest festival, The Great Estate is now just one week away and our Laura is looking forward to kicking back in a field: something childhood in Cornwall has always consisted of.
The Great Estate
With local street food vendors and internationally recognised bands, the most rambunctious garden party looks to kick off the summer with a bang. Set in the grounds of Scorrier House on Friday 2nd – Sunday 4th June 2017, and with an impressive lineup including Echo and the Bunnymen, Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show and The Electric Swing Circus, there is also a Wild Wine Club, Wild Eco Spa and an exciting mix of poetry and arts.
Exploration
Grounds are length at the Great Estate Festival, and there promises to be plenty to explore, including the Secret Gin Garden which encompasses the Classical Corner. Adding an air of sophistication to this weird and wonderful event, the weekend will present a string of talented acts that are not to be missed. Easing revelers into the afternoon are Arcadia 78rpm Orchestra, Classic Strings Duo, The Blue Angels, Andy Marshall, Rachel Williams, Alex Govier and many more, which plan to bring variety to Scorrier and to the festival.
Comedy
Guaranteed to deliver a mixture of dark gags and intelligent stories, MJ Walker will headline the Comedy Stage on Friday 2nd June. With an uncanny ability to have all walks of life laughing at the same material, the Newquay-based comedian will be armed with a ridiculously big beard and an array of questionable tattoos. Saturday 3rd June will play host to George Rigden, one of the most exciting, hotly-tipped and sought after new acts on the UK comedy circuit. Having made his Edinburgh debut in 2015, George gigs for some of the UK’s leading promoters. Joining them onstage will be Nick Banks, Frankie Doré, Tom Latimer, David Arnold, Sami Stone, Lulu Popplewell, Graham Wilkes and Claire Rowley.
Entertainment
Dead Beats Poetry Corner is a relaxed space for open-minded poets and creative writers. Guest speaker Sue Kittow, author of Walks in the Footsteps of Poldark, will be sharing her experiences and most notable influences. Sue will be joined by a selection of other writers to answer questions and offer advice.
The BBC Introducing Stage will proudly play host to a selection of the region’s rising stars. Introducing festival guests to Cornwall’s freshest talent, performances can be expected from Rosie Crow, Gavin Kaufman, Sam Richardson, Rue, Kezia, Jack Bartlett, Hollie Rogers, Ezmay Grace, King Creature, Lucy Anna, Even Nine, SheBeat and Emma Chamberlain.
Food and wine lovers will be pleased to hear that the increasingly popular Wild Wine Club will descend on The Great Estate to host a candle lit, long table banquet in a derelict horse shed hidden within the Scorrier grounds. Serving up a delicious three course Sicilian feast with wine pairings, sommelier Debbie Warner and her guest chefs will add a touch of luxury to the festival weekend. Come as strangers, leave as friends. Bookings are essential to avoid disappointment.
Festival goers are reminded to bring their sketchbooks to create an illustrated memory of The Great Estate. With a passion for drawing, Penryn artist Lou Tonkin invites guests to feed their creative soul and join her on an artistic journey of the Scorrier House Estate. Complementing the scheduled Sketching Workshops across the weekend are Foraging Walks and Herbalist Workshops.
Don’t miss the Traditional Steam Barber Shop, the onsite Tattoo Parlour and Body Marbling Boutique. Relax and unwind in The Sanctuary with a soothing massage or take the kids to The Playground for hours of fun. There are also Luxury Glamping options available to upgrade The Great Estate experience even more.
We can’t wait to wander in the forest at night to enjoy after hours tunes at the Woodland Silent Disco and in the Dance Tent.

Festival guests are also reminded that the picturesque Mineral Tramways Coast to Coast Trail is a great way to journey to this year’s event. Starting from Portreath, Bissoe or Devoran, cyclists can meander along the early horse-drawn tramroads before arriving at the festival gates.
The last remaining High Noon Weekend Camping Tickets are currently on sale priced at £71.50 (plus £3.50 booking fee). Entry is free for under 10’s.
