The iconic Red Velvet Cupcake is getting a dark and moody makeover as the insta-worthy black velvet cupcake arrives in London on Friday.

The limited-edition dessert will go on menus for two weeks at The Crown & Barrel, the restaurant and bar of The Gunpowder Plot Immersive at Tower Vaults at the Tower of London across two weeks, priced at £4.50.

They’ve been made in partnership with award-winning novelty cake maker Adam Cox of Adams Cakes,  to mark the arrival of the Autumn Equinox as Brits head into longer and darker nights.

Cox has been a go-to cake designer for celebrities including Jonathan Ross and Jimmy Carr.

Paying a tribute to the dark and eerie events that The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 is known for, the Black Velvet Cupcake is reminiscent of the Red Velvet but with a darker ‘explosive’ twist.

The Black Velvet Cupcake will feature a delicious jet-black fluffy sponge, paired with a soft grey cream cheese frosting and sprinkled with charcoal seasoning and edible black glitter for an added wow factor.

Guests can take a bite – and get an ‘explosion’ of popping candy for added measure.

Londoners on their daily commute may get a visit from Guy Fawkes – the famous conspirator of The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 – himself (well, the actor playing him!) draped in cloaks and wearing boots with spurs.

He will be handing out free cupcakes outside of The Crown & Barrel on the morning of launch.

Experience seekers can use the code BLACKVELVET*** to get £10 off each order to The Gunpowder Plot Immersive, which offers a thrilling cloak-and-dagger adventure that brings to life the failed attempt by Roman Catholic plotters to blow up King James I and his government during the state opening of Parliament on 5th November 1605.

To help recreate a feeling that audiences are at the centre of The Gunpowder Plot, Immersive uses a mix of live actors, movie-quality sets, virtual reality (VR), and multi-sensory effects to create a truly immersive experience.

The perilous events of 1605 have gone on to inspire firework displays and bonfires throughout the country for over 400 years.

The Gunpowder Plot tickets are on sale now at  https://gunpowderimmersive.com from £40-£70 + booking fee, Friday – Sunday.  VIP tickets  are also available from £90.
