Right now UK awareness of South American cuisine seems to be on the rise (the Mexicans seem to be benefiting most from this) – but the Peruvians are also getting a shot at the Great British Palette as well. This is goddamn great, because if Peruvian food is anything like what I tried at Tierra Peru then more people need to know about it. Tierra Peru is located on Essex Road, in Islington – I don’t know enough about Peruvian cuisine to tell you if they have a particular style or anything, but I can tell you that they offer all the stuff you (might) have heard of (Pisco Sours), and a lot of things that you haven’t (Torta Tres Leches De Lucuma). We went for the Incan platter, which was basically ALL KINDS OF GAINZ. I dunno if people in Peru eat this kinda stuff on a regular basis but damn. They also had a woman dancing in the Peruvian style (though the music was way too loud) and it turns out that this is a family run business, which accounts for the kinda intimate dining experience (it really is a tiny venue – feels a bit like someone’s front room but with a sound system hidden in the ceiling). I would very much recommend it to people who haven’t yet tried Peruvian food, or who already enjoy South American food.
