South London pop-up – Taca Tacos – has opened its first site in Deptford Market Yard.
The taco kitchen serves soft tacos centering around the signature beef birria, a traditional dish from the state of Jalisco in Mexico.
Beef brisket is braised for 6 hours in a house-made bone broth with a mixture of Mexican guajillo, ancho and pasilla chilies.
The beef fat and chilies combine to create a vibrant oil into which the corn tortillas are dipped into, then fried on a griddle with Monterey Jack cheese and chopped beef.
Tacos are then folded and filled with pink onions, coriander and homemade salsa to be dunked in the beef broth.
Also on the menu are the Baja Fish, Pimientos and a Pulled Shroom Quesataco.
Nachos, Quesadillas and Cali-style Burritos round off the menu. Jarritos, Peckham Pils and Villages IPA plus the house Taca Margarita make up the drinks offering.
Taca will also be including a brunch option on Saturdays and Sundays.
Taca has been making its name for the past three years at a weekly spot at Brockley Market, as well as various other street food events, popups and residencies across London.
The brand was created in 2019 by Thorne Addyman who, after being inspired by trips to California, wanted to create the food he enjoyed on the west coast.
Thorne is opening the new site with his Head Chef Tung Van Fan, who joined him on the adventure last year.
One of the signature dishes of the Taca menu is Beef Birria,
The brunch offering from Taca will be available 10am to 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays, with the addition of creamy eggs and crispy hash browns, along with a choice of usual fillings.
Deptford Market Yard houses a mixture of other independent businesses including a Tapas bar, a vinyl record shop and a cocktail bar.
