The Product

The Nairn’s Gluten Free Flatbread has been produced as a light, crispy alternative to a sandwich. Made with wholegrain gluten-free oats, it comes in two flavours, Original and Rosemary and Sea Salt. The flatbreads are bigger than a conventional cracker which makes them perfect for layering different toppings, from cream cheese and salmon to mozzarella and roasted vegetables. Those who are looking to cut down on bread can rejoice as the flatbreads are also 55 calories each and come conveniently packed in pouches of six – although the oats are so wholesome we can only manage four in one sitting! And indeed, Nairns claim that as well as being all natural, veggie-friendly and high in fibre, the slow releasing energy that characterises oats, makes you feel fuller for longer.

The Verdict

We tried these several ways and found them adaptable and satisfying. The Original flavour makes a perfect base for smoked salmon and cream cheese but is equally well-suited for a breadless bruschetta, marinated vegetables, pâté and blue cheese and chutney – all tried and tested by us. While they don’t taste like much on their own, their relative mildness makes them an ideal foil for more flavoursome toppings, all the while the healthy oats are working to fill you up and keep you going throughout the day.

The Rosemary and Sea Salt flatbreads definitely pack a bit more of a punch, with a pleasant herby taste which works really well with hummus or brie and figs, as recommended by Nairn’s. We also tried them with camembert, roasted tomatoes and garlic and topped with cold meats. As these had salt added to them, they did make for a tastier option on their own, however it is clear how useful it is to have both flavours. They are a great addition for those looking for a fuss-free lunch or a healthy desk snack but also work really nicely in salads, soups or as part of a larger offering at social events, with a versatility makes them a valuable addition to any larder.
