Review – New Covent Garden Soups

Winter is here and I don’t know about you, but for me that means warm, tasty and hearty soups are required. Great for a healthy lunch to get you through the day, as a starter or a meal in itself, soup is very versatile and enjoyed by all. The New Covent Garden Soup Co has a huge selection of soups already available, but two new additions have found their way to the shelves that are packed with vegetables and wintery goodness.

First up was my favourite, Butternut Squash and Pumpkin Seeds.

This soup was great, with a sweet and satisfying taste that managed not to be too rich. There’s always a fear that a sweet vegetable will taste more like a dessert but thankfully that wasn’t the case here. The addition of the pumpkin seeds not only helped to achieve this balance, but also add a different texture and a bit of crunch to the soup, which helps to break it up, particularly if being consumed as a whole meal. I didn’t get that many seeds when drinking it out of a mug, so my advice is go for a bowl and a big soup spoon and tuck in! The texture was generally smooth but with a hint of grain that helped it to feel fresher on the tongue.

The other soup that we were introduced to was Kale & Nutmeg. This soup is more for those who are health conscious and looking to get some vitamins packed into their diet as it is super vegetably. The taste is quite metallic – probably due to the kale content – and is a little more acquired than the butternut one. The texture was also not as easy-going as it was a bit lumpy and chunky. The nutmeg is more prevalent on the smell than the taste, so the kale flavour is very strong. This would make a great healthy lunch or after-gym boost.
