Our Kelly gives lentil waves a whirl, to deliver the verdict on these vegetable crisps…
What Is It?
It’s all in the name, really. Burts have switched potatoes for lentils to create a healthier range of crisps that give these traditional snacks a run for their money.
How Much Is It?
Multipack (6 x 20g bags) – RRP £1.99
Pros
Low in calories
If you, like me, are guilty of counting calories throughout the day, these crisps are bound to draw you in. Coming in at less than 100 calories, you can tuck into this snack without it weighing on your conscience.
Big on flavour
You’d be foolish to compromise on taste for the sake of a few calories though, and these lentil waves are surprisingly big on flavour. Who thought lentils could be so moreish…
Suitable for vegans
Yep, veggies roll up because these snacks are made for people who care about the provenance of their food.
Cons
Genuinely scratching my head for a con… at first, I thought they were pretty scant on portion sizes at just 20g per bag. But believe it or not, they’re a lot more filling than they look!
Thai Sweet Chilli
A contemporary favourite in the crisp aisle, Thai sweet chilli is a hard flavour to contend with, as the signature taste of some of the UK’s best-selling brands.
Burts’ bite-sized waves are dusted with a tingly Thai sweet chilli coating that evenly covers every curve of the crisp. With a satisfying crunch when you bite into each one, these small but thick crisps are incredibly tasty.
Made with chilli extract from South Devon and packaged by Pedro (apparently), these lentil waves have a personal touch that gives Burts crisps a quirky, artisan-like charm.
Lightly Salted
I’m no fan of lightly salted. In fact, we have a growing pile of unwanted ready salted crisps from the multipacks my boyfriend buys at home. But these lentil treats proved you should never judge a crisp by its packaging.
Free from the generous coating of their Thai sweet chilli sisters, the earthy flavour of lentil really shone through in these lightly salted crisps, seasoned just the right amount to bring out their natural flavour.
Again, they were thick and crunchy, with a relatively neutral aftertaste that left a hint of salt on your tongue. Thanks Steve, who supposedly packaged this batch..
The Verdict:
A staple of the snack drawer, it’s a risky strategy to play with the tried-and-tested flavours and textures that the nation loves so dearly. Putting a fresh spin on some of the most popular varieties, Burts Lentil Waves have managed to carve out a niche in an overcrowded market, and make their way into health-conscious snackers’ lunch boxes – mine included!
